King Kutter Tiller PTO shaft too long?

I have an 8N Ford tractor and purchased a 4' KK tiller. My at issue is 2-fold. First, the shaft is not solid, but rather, two shafts that slide into each other. Will this coin the shaft less profficient? Weaker? Secondly, the shaft seems to be too

Cut a few inches off on both pieces, until it fits. Terminate the hitch too make sure not bottoming out.
